Oklahoma State Information
Oklahoma is the 46th State in the Union
Oklahoma is in the southern-central U.S. and has a lot to offer in terms of culture and nature. The state is known for its wide prairies, rolling plains, and that really distinctive red soil. You’ll also find farmland, peaceful lakes, and even some rugged mountains in the mix.
Oklahoma has a deep connection to Native American history since many tribal nations call it home. The capital, Oklahoma City, is a busy urban center, and Tulsa is another major city with a strong focus on culture and the arts.
The economy here is pretty diverse, with big industries like energy, agriculture, aerospace, and tech. People in Oklahoma are also really proud of their art, their world-class museums, and their music scene, which is heavily influenced by country, jazz, and Native American traditions.
What's in a name?
Derived from two Choctaw words, 'okla' meaning 'people' and 'humma' meaning 'red.'

Oklahoma’s geography is surprisingly varied, with everything from open prairies and rolling plains to dense forests and rugged mountain ranges. Out west, you’ll find the Great Plains stretching out for miles, while the northeast is home to the Ozark Plateau, which brings a more hilly, elevated landscape into the mix.
The Arkansas River winds through the eastern part of the state, adding to the variety, and the Panhandle extends into the High Plains, blending into Texas. Oklahoma is also known for unique spots like the Great Salt Plains, its many lakes, and the Wichita Mountains, which are perfect for hiking or just enjoying the outdoors.
Oklahoma Economy
Oklahoma’s economy is built on a mix of industries that keep it running strong. Energy plays a huge role, with the state being a big name in oil and natural gas, thanks to its rich shale formations. Agriculture is another major player—Oklahoma is a top producer of cattle, wheat, and poultry, which keeps its rural areas thriving.
The aerospace and defense sectors are growing fast, too, with military bases and aviation manufacturing bringing in jobs and innovation. Manufacturing and tech are also on the rise, adding even more diversity to the economy. Tourism helps out as well, especially with people visiting to explore Native American heritage sites and the state’s natural beauty.
