Grover Cleveland
Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th President of the United States, served non-consecutive terms from 1885 to 1889 and then from 1893 to 1897. Born on March 18, 1837, in Caldwell, New Jersey, Cleveland was known for his honesty and commitment to public service. Before his presidency, he served as the Mayor of Buffalo and later as Governor of New York. As president, Cleveland focused on fiscal responsibility, vetoing numerous spending bills to maintain a balanced budget. Cleveland faced significant challenges during his second term, including the Panic of 1893, a severe economic depression. His response to the crisis, marked by repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, contributed to his reputation as a principled leader. Cleveland's personal life also attracted attention. He married Frances Folsom, becoming the only president to wed in the White House. His commitment to honesty, often depicted in his famous phrase "public office is a public trust," defined his political career, leaving a lasting legacy despite the challenges of his time.
