Hawaii State Bird - Nene
Hawaii State Bird

Nene

The Nene, also known as the Hawaiian Goose (Branta sandvicensis), is a distinctive and endangered species of waterfowl native to the Hawaiian Islands, and it holds the honor of being the official state bird of Hawaii. Remarkably adapted to its unique island habitat, the Nene is characterized by its distinctive appearance, including a striking combination of dark plumage, a black face mask, and prominent cream-colored cheek patches. Unlike most other geese, it has evolved to be primarily a vegetarian, feeding on native plants. Once on the brink of extinction, concerted conservation efforts have helped to increase the Nene population, making it a symbol of resilience and the importance of protecting Hawaii's fragile ecosystems.
