Mississippi State Bird

Mockingbird

The Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), designated as the official state bird of Mississippi in 1944, is a highly versatile and distinctive songbird known for its remarkable vocal abilities. These medium-sized, grayish birds are adept mimics, capable of imitating a wide range of sounds, including the songs of other birds, animals, and even mechanical noises. Native to Mississippi and much of the southeastern United States, Northern Mockingbirds are often spotted perched atop trees or shrubs, where they sing and defend their territory with a repertoire of melodious tunes. Their melodious and varied songs make them an integral part of Mississippi's natural soundscape and a cherished emblem of the state's rich avian diversity.
