Alabama State Flag

Date adopted: Feb 16, 1895

The current flag of Alabama, adopted in 1895, consists of a crimson St. Andrew's cross on a white field, with the bars of the cross measuring at least six inches in width, extending diagonally across the flag. This design draws inspiration from the St. Andrew's cross, which represents the cross on which St. Andrew was crucified. The flag has historical ties to the Confederate States of America, but there is no concrete legislative record indicating that it was intended as a commemoration of the Confederacy. The flag's origins remain somewhat unclear, with some suggesting it was inspired by the Confederate battle flag, while others believe it may have been created to prepare for an exposition in Atlanta, Georgia. Regardless of its origins, Alabama's flag has remained a distinctive symbol of the state's identity, evoking its history and heritage.
