Connecticut State Flag

Date adopted: Sep 9, 1897

The flag of Connecticut is a distinctive emblem featuring a white baroque shield adorned with three grapevines, each bearing three clusters of purple grapes, set against a royal blue field. Beneath the shield, the banner carries the Latin motto "Qui Transtulit Sustinet," which translates to "He who transplanted sustains." Introduced in 1897 and designed by Abby Day Slocomb, the regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution's Anna Warner Bailey chapter, this flag draws its inspiration from the historic seal of Saybrook Colony, established in 1639. Over time, the seal was modified to represent the three oldest settlements or possibly the three distinct colonies that became part of Connecticut. In a 2001 survey, the flag ranked 50th out of 72 U.S. state and territorial flags by the North American Vexillological Association.
