Georgia State Flag

Date adopted: Feb 19, 2003

The current flag of Georgia, adopted on February 19, 2003, consists of three horizontal stripes, red-white-red, with a blue canton in the upper left corner. Inside the canton is a ring of 13 white stars encircling Georgia's gold-colored coat of arms, symbolizing its status as one of the original Thirteen Colonies. The coat of arms features an arch representing the state's constitution, pillars symbolizing the three branches of government, and the state motto, "Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation." These elements are guarded by a figure in colonial attire from the American Revolutionary War, and a drawn sword represents the defense of the state's constitution. Below these elements is the U.S. motto, "In God We Trust." This design is inspired by the First National Flag of the Confederacy, known as the "Stars and Bars." While some state flags have removed references to the Confederacy, Georgia's flag retains them, and it is one of three U.S. state flags featuring the words "In God We Trust," along with Florida and Mississippi.
