Illinois State Flag

Date adopted: Sep 17, 1969

The Great Seal of the State of Illinois serves as the official emblem for the state, signifying the authenticity of state documents. The state flag of Illinois consists of this seal placed on a white background, with the word "Illinois" below it. This seal, adopted in 1869, features an eagle holding a banner with the state motto, "State Sovereignty, National Union." The dates on the seal, 1818 and 1868, mark the state's admission to the Union and the redesign of the Great Seal. Interestingly, the word "State" is at the bottom of the motto, and "Sovereignty" appears upside-down. The flag is notable for being one of ten U.S. state flags that feature an eagle.
