Mississippi State Flag

Date adopted: Jan 11, 2021

The current flag of Mississippi, adopted on January 11, 2021, features a white magnolia blossom surrounded by 21 stars and the words "In God We Trust" written below. This design is set against a blue Canadian pale with two vertical gold borders on a red field. The topmost star consists of a pattern of five diamonds, an Indigenous symbol, while the other 20 stars are white to represent Mississippi as the 20th state to join the Union. Mississippi has had three official state flags in its history, with the first being the "Magnolia Flag" in 1861. The second, adopted in 1894, incorporated the Confederate battle flag but was retired in 2020 due to controversy. The third and current flag was designed by a commission established in June 2020, following legislative action to remove the Confederate battle flag and incorporate "In God We Trust." It was approved by voters in a November 2020 ballot measure.
