Nebraska State Flag

Date adopted: Jul 16, 1963

The flag of Nebraska is a blue rectangular cloth featuring a variation of the Nebraskan state seal, a design commissioned in 1925. This design was established through a legislative bill that specified the state seal in gold and silver on a blue field. The original seal dates back to 1867 and was used on unofficial state banners, sometimes on a yellow background, before the official blue design. Despite some unsuccessful attempts to change the seal, including one by architect Bertram Goodhue, the existing state seal on a blue field was ratified as the state banner in 1925 and officially designated as the state flag in 1963, making Nebraska one of the last states to adopt an official flag.
