New Jersey State Flag

Date adopted: May 11, 1896

The flag of the State of New Jersey features the state's coat of arms on a buff-colored background, with the coat of arms consisting of a shield bearing three plows, symbolizing the state's agricultural heritage. Atop the shield is a forward-facing helmet with a horse's head as its crest. Two female figures, Liberty and Ceres, adorn the seal, with Liberty holding a staff topped by a stylized Phrygian cap, and Ceres holding an overflowing cornucopia. A streamer at the emblem's base bears the state motto, "Liberty and Prosperity," along with the year of statehood, 1776. Originally designed by Pierre Eugene du Simitiere in 1777, it underwent slight modifications in 1928. The seal is prominently featured in both the flag of New Jersey and the state's great seal.
