North Dakota State Flag

Date adopted: Mar 11, 1911

The flag of North Dakota, adopted on March 11, 1911, is a near exact replica of the unit banner carried by the state's troop contingent in the Philippine-American War, featuring a blue field. Its design was initially approved by the North Dakota Legislative Assembly in 1911, with the color not precisely specified. Legislation in 1943 aligned the flag with the original troop banner displayed at the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck, resembling the Great Seal of the United States. By law, the flag's design mirrors that of the First North Dakota Infantry during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. It is one of ten U.S. state flags to feature an eagle, joining the flags of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Wyoming.
