South Dakota State Flag
Date adopted: Nov 9, 1992
The flag of South Dakota is a striking representation of the state, featuring a sky blue field with the state seal in navy blue on white at the center. It is surrounded by golden triangles symbolizing the sun's rays, along with inscriptions in gold capital letters that read "South Dakota" on top and "The Mount Rushmore State" (the state nickname) on the bottom. The sun element reflects the state's typical weather. The original inscription at the bottom used to be "The Sunshine State" but was changed in 1992. The official pledge to the South Dakota flag emphasizes loyalty and support for the state, describing it as the "land of sunshine" and the "land of infinite variety," but it does not replace or supersede the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag.
