Utah State Flag

Date adopted: Feb 16, 2011

The flag of the State of Utah, adopted in February 2011, features the state seal of Utah encircled in a golden ring against a dark navy blue background. It replaced a similar flag that had been in use since 1913. The flag has undergone recent changes, with a new design slated to become official in March 2024, following legislative efforts from 2018 to 2023 to assess the need for a new flag and gather citizen input. The symbolism of the current flag is rich: a bald eagle symbolizes protection, the sego lily represents peace, and the state motto "Industry" and the beehive symbolize progress and hard work. The U.S. flags on the design highlight Utah's commitment to the United States, and the state's name appears below the beehive. The dates 1847 and 1896 signify the arrival of Mormon pioneers and Utah's admission as the 45th state, although the flag design features 46 stars. Additionally, six arrows represent the state's six Native American tribes, emphasizing diversity and heritage. The flag's historical significance is underscored by the inclusion of the American flag as part of its design, reflecting Utah's loyalty to the United States, a crucial aspect given the delayed statehood due to concerns over loyalty during the early settlements. Notably, Utah's flag is one of only ten in the U.S. to feature an eagle and one of two to incorporate the Stars and Stripes flag.
