Vermont State Flag

Date adopted: Jun 1, 1923

The Vermont state flag features the state's coat of arms and the motto "Freedom and Unity" on a blue background, officially adopted on June 1, 1923. Its design has evolved over time, initially resembling the Green Mountain Boys' flag before resembling the U.S. flag, and later differentiating itself to avoid confusion. The coat of arms on the flag incorporates symbolism representing Vermont's heritage, including pine needle supporters from the Battle of Plattsburgh, a central pine tree for the state's forests, a cow and wheat sheaves for dairy and agriculture, a deer head for wildlife, and the Green Mountains in the background. The motto, "Freedom and Unity," reflects the balance between individual freedom and the common good within the state.
