The flag of Washington is a distinctive emblem featuring the state seal, depicting George Washington, set against a dark green background with optional gold fringe. It stands out as the only U.S. state flag with a green field and the sole state flag featuring an American president's image. Oversight of flag protocol and approval of commercial replica flags are handled by the secretary of state. Officially adopted on March 5, 1923, the flag has been an enduring symbol of Washington since its statehood in 1889 when it lacked an official flag. Designed by the Washington chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1915, it was adopted by the state legislature in the early 1920s. Over the years, minor revisions have been made, including standardized colors in 1955 and a modernized seal in 1967.
