Wyoming State Flag
Date adopted: Jan 31, 1917
The flag of Wyoming is a powerful symbol rich in meaning. It features the silhouette of an American bison in red, symbolizing Native Americans and the sacrifice of pioneers. White represents purity and uprightness, while blue signifies the skies and distant mountains, as well as fidelity, justice, and virility. The bison represents local fauna, and the seal suggests the custom of branding livestock. In 1916, a contest led to the flag's design by Verna Keays, with the bison facing the fly to symbolize its freedom on the plains. Although later adjustments were suggested, the bison facing the hoist became the standard design. Wyoming's flag is one of ten U.S. state flags to feature an eagle.
