Delaware State Seal

Delaware State Seal

The great seal of the state of Delaware, adopted on January 17, 1777, and updated in its current form on April 29, 2004, is a significant emblem rich in symbolism. Its central element is a shield featuring horizontal orange, blue, and white stripes, with agricultural symbols of wheat and corn on the orange stripe and an ox on the white stripe. Above the shield is a sailing ship, representing the state's maritime industry, while a farmer and a militiaman with a musket support the shield. The motto "Liberty and Independence" was contributed by the Order of the Cincinnati, reflecting Delaware's commitment to freedom. The surrounding inscription denotes important historical dates: 1704 (establishment of the General Assembly), 1776 (Declaration of Independence), and 1787 (ratification of the U.S. Constitution). The seal has undergone minor changes over the years, with significant modifications in 1907, including the change from "THE DELAWARE STATE" to "THE STATE OF DELAWARE."
