Georgia State Seal
The official state seal of Georgia is a powerful emblem rich in historical significance and symbolism. Centered within the seal is an arch with three pillars, representing the state's motto, "Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation." These pillars symbolize the three branches of government: legislative, executive, and judicial. Embracing the pillars are scrolls inscribed with the state's official motto. Standing between the second and third columns is a member of the Georgia Militia, holding a drawn sword, signifying the citizen-soldier's commitment to defending the state's Constitution. Surrounding the coat of arms is a border, and the motto "State of Georgia, 1776" is inscribed outside. On the reverse side of the seal, an image of Georgia's coast portrays a ship arriving to collect tobacco and cotton, representing the state's export trade, while a smaller boat symbolizes internal commerce. The motto "Agriculture and Commerce, 1776" surrounds this image. This seal, with its intricate design and profound meaning, serves as a testament to Georgia's values, heritage, and its enduring commitment to wisdom, justice, and moderation. Over the years, the seal has undergone changes in its inscribed dates, reflecting historical milestones such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and it holds a unique place in the state's history and governance. Additionally, the seal has had its share of controversies and stories, including its period of non-use during Reconstruction and its role in the "Three Governors Controversy." Furthermore, an iconic representation of the seal's architectural elements, known as The Arch, stands at the University of Georgia, bearing historical significance and legends surrounding its symbolism.
