Mississippi State Seal
The Great Seal of the State of Mississippi, adopted in 2014, replaced a previous version in use since the 19th century. The seal features a majestic eagle at its center with outstretched wings, holding both an olive branch for peace and a quiver of arrows symbolizing the power to wage war. The outer circle bears the inscription "The Great Seal of the State of Mississippi" at the top and "In God We Trust" at the bottom. The history of Mississippi's seal dates back to its territorial days in 1798, and it remained unchanged when the state was officially established in 1817. The addition of "In God We Trust" to the seal in 2014, purportedly to defend religious freedom, was implemented following a state senate vote on January 31, 2014.
