North Dakota State Seal

North Dakota State Seal

The Great Seal of the State of North Dakota is the official emblem of North Dakota, with variations in coloring. Its design is rooted in the description of the Territory of Dakota's seal from 1862-3. The seal features a tree in an open field surrounded by wheat bundles, with a plow, anvil, sledge, bow, arrows, an Indian on horseback chasing a buffalo toward the setting sun, and a half circle of forty-two stars. The motto "LIBERTY AND UNION NOW AND FOREVER, ONE AND INSEPARABLE" encircles it, with "GREAT SEAL" at the top and "STATE OF NORTH DAKOTA" at the bottom, alongside "OCTOBER 1st" on the left and "1889" on the right. This seal, designed by Lili Stewart in 1987, is now described in Article XI, Section 2 of the Constitution of North Dakota.
