Ohio State Seal

Ohio State Seal

The Great Seal of the State of Ohio, the official insignia of Ohio, is widely used across the state's government and institutions. It prominently features a circular coat of arms depicting a sunrise in Chillicothe, Ohio's first capital, along with symbols representing the state's origins. The state motto, "With God, All Things Are Possible," is often included. The seal's roots trace back to its establishment in 1803, initially based on a sketch by Secretary of State William Creighton, Jr. The design remained largely unregulated until a standardized version was introduced in 1967, with further modifications in 1996. Ohio's 88 counties each maintain their official seals based on the state seal. The design specifications for the seal are detailed in Ohio Revised Code section 5.10, and the coat of arms is described in section 5.04, showcasing a variety of elements representing the state's history and natural beauty. Ohio's state seal has undergone multiple redesigns throughout its history, with a unique period from 1805 to 1866 during which its design was unspecified among the states.
