South Dakota State Seal

South Dakota State Seal

The Great Seal of the State of South Dakota, designed in 1885 while it was still a territory, is a symbolic representation of the state's values and resources. The outer ring of the seal displays the text "State of South Dakota" at the top and "Great Seal" at the bottom, with the year of statehood, 1889. Inside the inner circle, the state motto "Under God the People Rule" is inscribed. The central image features hills, a river with a boat, a farmer, a mine, and cattle, symbolizing the state's commerce, agriculture, industry, and natural resources. The use of the South Dakota state seal is governed by state law, and unauthorized reproduction or commercial use is prohibited, with violations considered misdemeanors. The current representation of the state seal is designated by state law and is the basis for all official reproductions. The South Dakota Secretary of State serves as the custodian of the state seal.
