Texas State Seal
The Seal of the State of Texas, rooted in a history dating back to the Republic of Texas, features a star of five points encircled by olive and live oak branches, bearing the words "the State of Texas." The reverse side of the seal, adopted in 1961 and officially defined in 1991, includes a shield divided into two parts depicting the cannon of the Battle of Gonzales and Vince's Bridge on the lower half, and the Alamo on the upper half. Surrounding the shield are live oak and olive branches and flags representing the six nations that have had sovereignty over Texas, with the motto "REMEMBER THE ALAMO" above and "TEXAS ONE AND INDIVISIBLE" below. The flags on the seal represent the "six flags over Texas." The seal has evolved over time, changing five times since Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836. The current standardized design, adopted in 1992, adheres to the state constitution's specific language, though older unstandardized versions are still used by some state offices.
