Vermont State Seal

Vermont State Seal

The Great Seal of the State of Vermont, designed by Ira Allen, embodies the state's rich history and values. It portrays a 14-branched pine tree emerging from a forest, representing Vermont as the 14th state in the union, with a sheaf of grain above symbolizing agriculture. A cow on the right signifies the state's dairy farming heritage. Wavy lines at the top and bottom may represent clouds, the Connecticut River, and Lake Champlain, Vermont's eastern and western borders. The state motto "Freedom & Unity" is central, reflecting Vermont's commitment to balancing personal freedom with community responsibility. Originally used by the independent Vermont Republic, the seal is primarily for official documents but has appeared decoratively in select instances. The coat of arms of Vermont and state flags also feature elements of the seal. It is collectively managed by various state offices, and the original dies are held in the Secretary of State's office in Montpelier.
